New Ministerial Declaration recognises mussel cultivation as a sea-based measure to abate Baltic eutrophication!
During the 'Our Baltic' conference that took place online on the 28th of September 2020, Ministers of Environment, Maritime Economy, Agriculture and Fisheries from 8 Baltic Sea EU Member States signed a new Ministerial Declaration Declaration, together with the European Commissioner for ‘Environment, Oceans and Fisheries’, Virginijus Sinkeviçius.
The Declaration comes with an Annex to ensure its implementation, and one of the key points under 'Eutrophication' is:
We will PROMOTE ecologically sustainable sea-based measures, where appropriate with potential for eutrophication abatement such as mussel cultivation and blue catch crops
This is great news for the work that SUBMARINER members are doing on mussel cultivation, and especially for our Mussels Working Group!
