Report from the ABC Conference - algae bioactive compounds from research to innovation 


The FucoSan project held its final conference online on August 25 and 26, 2020 with over 120 participants – SUBMARINER Network was also there.

In addition to participants from Denmark and Germany, Norway, Sweden and India were strongly represented, as well as other European countries and even sporadically from North and South America. 

The partners and guest speakers presented their scientific findings from basic research and possible biomedical applications. Keynote speakers were Nathalie Bourgougnon, Director of the Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology and Chemistry at the University of Brittany Sud, and Trond Helgerud, Seaweed R&D Manager at DuPont in Norway.

Among the various expert internal speakers, were Prof. Dr. Deniz Tasdemir from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel that presented “Automated tools for identifying the massive metabolome and bioactive constituents of Baltic Fucus vesiculosus”, Dr. Rafael Meichssner from CRM - Coastal Research & Management, presenting “Aquaculture of the brown algal genus Fucus in the Baltic Sea”, and Dr. Susanne Woldmann, from oceanBASIS GmbH on  “Low hanging fucoidan on a fast track to the market”.  There were some of the astonishing results of the FucoSan project. 

Furthermore, as external speakers also Dr. Anu Lähteenmäki Uutela, from Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), and Dr. Efthalia Arvaniti (programme manager of the SUBMARINER Network). Anu presented latest findings from the GRASS project (Interreg BSR) in relation to the European Rules on Macroalgae Products incl. food, cosmetics, material and energy, while Efthalia invited companies and experts to get involved in the SUBMARINER Accelerator programme (co-funded by the Alliance+ project).
