Closer cooperation needed for the Blue Bioeconomy in Latvia
A national discussion “Blue Bioeconomy in Latvia” organized by Kurzeme Planning Region and Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology in the framework of projects GRASS and Blue Platform was held in Zoom on 15 June. The invited speakers represented DG Mare, ministries of Agriculture and Education&Science, research and academic institutions, and entrepreneurs. Mr. Maris Stulgis of DG Mare stressed the importance of strengthening blue bioeconomy and especially the role of algae in EU initiatives “Farm to Fork” and Green Deal. Current national plans involve no strong incentives for algae or mussels. Still, the very few blue bioeconomy cases in Latvia are linked exactly with microalgae cultivation and food production at “ SpirulinaNord” and beach cast collection for agar extraction at “Eksta Eko”. Therefore final conclusion was to cooperate closely among stakeholders and continue finding options for further development of blue bioeconomy sectors in Latvia.
